It’s true, places like the U.S. Capitol are sometimes mobbed with tourists, but there's good reason for this: it's one of the most politically important buildings in the nation. For the same reason, touring the U.S. Capitol is also popular among DC locals, and if it's been a while since you visited, you might want to stop by for a refresher.

All tours start from the Capitol Visitor Center and last about 90 minutes (arrive a bit early and you can enjoy some of the Visitor Center’s family-friendly exhibits). Once your tour begins, you’ll visit key sites like the Crypt, the Old Senate Chamber, the Capitol Rotunda, and the National Statuary Hall. Insider tip: be sure to contact your congressional representative's office before your visit to request free passes, and after the tour, your pass will admit you into the main Senate and House galleries to watch American government at work.
