If you had fun over the 4th of July holiday weekend, consider extending your Independence Day celebration with a trip to the National Archives Museum, where you can examine rare original documents and artifacts related to the history of our country. One of the most popular patriotic exhibitions is the original Declaration of Independence, housed in the Public Vault and available for folks to visit. Marvel over the fragile paper this historic document is written on, locate your favorite phrases within it, and then check out the famous signatures at the bottom.
The Public Vaults also house a variety of Revolutionary War records, 19th-century documents related to the abolition of slavery, and records that document congressional debates over prohibition during the 20th-century. It’s true that many DC residents have already been to the National Archives Museum, but if it’s been awhile since you last visited, now may be a good time to return!
