Where to Sip Espresso Over Free Wi-Fi Near Elevation at Washington Gateway: Kafe Bohem

Jarek Mika’s new venture, Kafe Bohem, brings a bit of Eastern European cafe culture to the Shaw neighborhood. The restaurant’s extensive outdoor and indoor seating, enormous windows (thrown open in the summertime), and exposed brick walls covered with local artwork make this an appealing spot to while away a few hours, whether you are catching up on work emails, chatting with a few friends from Elevation at Washington Gateway, or simply enjoying some some people-watching.

While the interior looks like many other DC coffee shops, there bits of European flair that distinguish Kafe Bohem from other local cafes. For instance, the menu takes its inspiration from Vienna, with drinks like the Grosser Brauner (double espresso with steamed milk) and lunch options like chicken schnitzel. Pour-over and single-origin aficionados will also appreciate the shop’s rotating selection of by-the-cup brews and press pots. The Wi Fi here is free—just check your receipt for the current password!
